Dantebea, who is usually a reliable source, has posts devoted to the work of a certain Lejaren-a-Hiller, a rather exotic sounding European name (surely an Austrian aristocrat). But after the redoubtable Grandmadid it suggested something else, I discover more probably that the photographer in question is the simpler John Hiller from Milwaukee who changed his name to just Lajaren Hiller for professional reasons. Here, in any case, are his illustrations from an article on the history of surgery. Working for pulps and as high up the scale as Life, he did graphic illustration also, though it falls far short of his photography.
Very interesting! Excellent detective work!
